The first order fo business was digitising everything. “Back then it was pretty old-school” says Melissa. “I did invoices on a spreadsheet—and going to the cloud was a big unknown”. But Melissa found that Counted helped with every dimension of developing systems—including reviewing and improving them annually.
“They also supported my learning” says Melissa, “so every year there were fewer challenges at end of year, and more opportunities”. Melissa Doran resisted coming in to work for the construction drafting business co-owned by her husband Damien for 5 years—but as the business grew and Damien’s original business partner left, she answered the call.
“I took over the financial operations with no qualifications or professional experience. I needed more than your average accountants—I needed a cheer squad, a mentor, and someone to have my back”, she says. “I’d been using my parents’ accountant—but I needed new technology and a support system to help use it”.

Some of that bigger-picture work included a Self Managed Super Fund that purchased the company’s office premises. “It’s a big step up from where we started from” says Melissa.
